The Fattorie Romeo del Castello, a family possession for centuries, are now run by Rosanna Romeo del Castello and her daughter Chiara Vigo. The Farms enjoy a happy position, being at the confluence of three natural parks: the Etna Park, the Park of the Nebrodi and the Alcantara River Park. A few steps from the medieval village of Randazzo, the property is located about seven hundred meters above sea level and borders the Alcantara river. It is no coincidence that this beautiful landscape has deserved the name of Contrada Allegracore in the past.

The volcanic eruption of 1981 buried under the lava a large part of the property, which was dedicated to hazelnut and olive groves. Even today, the extraordinary spectacle of a lava flow that miraculously deviated its course in front of the old vineyard, sparing the rural buildings of the late eighteenth century, remains. The whole of the buildings is a characteristic closed courtyard which overlooks the Church, the manor house, the farmhouses, the cellars with large chestnut barrels, the traditional Palmento at different elevations, the warehouses and the shelters for the animals.

The current property extends over thirty hectares, destined to vineyards, pereto, olive grove and oak and chestnut woods. The cultivation of native varieties is preferred, such as the Nerello Mascalese grapes and the Nocellara Etna olives. The vineyard falls within the Etna territory D.O.C. it consists of three hectares of centuries-old vineyard and ten hectares planted in 2004. The property also boasts a millenary olive tree, a true monument of nature, in whose trunk a hundred-year-old oak has spontaneously developed. Cultivation is carried out according to biological methods, respecting nature and ethnic traditions.

In memory of the great cultural heritage kept in the Etna vineyards, the Museum of the vine, wine and label is under construction. The premises of the Palmento and the cellars host an exhibition of ancient agricultural equipment and a collection of labels and bottles by the author. The exhibition is curated by Chiara Vigo, author of the book Arte e vino. The author’s label as an image of taste published in 2007 by the Venetian publisher Cicero.

The Fattorie Romeo del Castello are open, by appointment, for the visit of the property and the tasting of the products: the wines ALLEGRACORE Etna Rosso D.O.C., VIGO Etna Rosso D.O.C. and VIGOROSA Etna Rosato D.O.C., the pear brandy Coscia GIOIALUCE, the extra virgin olive oil FELICJUSO and the MIELE of Sulla flowers.
