La Cerreta farm ranges over 75 hectares and has Demeter biodynamic certification. It does not practise monoculture but rather fixed crop rotation, producing wine, oil, fruit, chestnuts, cereals, forage crops as well as rearing indigenous cattle, pigs, horses, bees and poultry. All this to make sure that the ecosystem has the biodiversity necessary to provide balance, and to ensure high-quality crops and produce. There have been vineyards at La Cerreta since ancient times but our current experiment began when 6 hectares of one of our old vineyards were replanted in 1999. We chose an area of the farm more exposed to the sun, which the old boys in the neighbourhood said was the area that produces the best wine in Pian delle Vigne, the place where we live. The particular relationship of management of the soil and microclimate, this area where chestnuts and Umbrella Pines grow magically side by side, the meeting of land and sea, all combine to give our wines unique and unmistakable characteristics. The agricultural management of the vineyards and our stock rearing techniques bring balance to the plant life. The major fertilising treatments are through green manure crops of legumes, brassicas and grasses as well as the use of composted manure. Insecticides are exclusively based on sulphur, Bordeaux mixture and bentonite. Hand-picking of small areas and winemaking using indigenous yeasts give our wines originality, personality and healthy character. We do not use any winemaking additives and fermentation follows its natural course. Sensitivity, passion and the love of our soil are the elements that inspire all our work.
