Now in its thirteenth year, the ViniVeri fair and tasting will be held from April 8-10 at La Fabbrica, an exhibition space in Cerea just a few miles from downtown Verona (click here for the Google map; see fair hours above).

As in years past, the Consorzio ViniVeri event will feature vini secondo natura: wines “as nature intended them” and foods produced using natural processes.

It seems like a lifetime ago. But it was in 2004 that a small group of grape growers came together to create the first event devoted exclusively to naturally produced wines in Italy. They were united in their shared lifestyle and philosophy and their approach to sustainable and environmentally friendly winemaking.

It was a pebble tossed into the pond and its ripples continue to make an impact.

In the beginning, there was misunderstanding regarding natural wine and even aversion. That gave way to consumers’ gradual and growing interest in wines made with respect for sustainability and biodiversity. Ultimately, that led to the adoption of European Union regulations for the production of organic wines in 2012. It didn’t take long for larger-scale conventional wineries to “discover,” at least nominally, the value in producing environmentally friendly and health-conscious wines.

From that point onward, ViniVeri has remained at the vanguard in its steadfast mission to give a voice to winemakers who choose an artisanal, natural, and sustainable approach to winemaking in both the vineyard and the cellar.

The organizers hold these values to be fundamental: Wines made using “natural” processes are expressions of respect for the environment and for the preservation of ecological balance. It’s the daily toil of every grape grower in protecting and championing her/his appellation — in all of its complexity and in its entirety.

It’s a battle for the uniqueness of every appellation’s identity. A struggle to save our countryside and native grape varieties. And a quest to create a self-awareness in consumption that can counter the growing pace of globalization and homogenization. These goals go hand-in-hand with the pursuit of quality and wholesomeness.

The theme of the thirteenth ViniVeri fair will be authenticity and diversity: Authenticity as the direct and true expression of the unique traits of an appellation, an ecosystem, and a grape variety; diversity as a factor in increasing the value and development of a given appellation.

ViniVeri embraces a production model that is respectful of nature. No one should be forced to adopt this alternative approach to winemaking. It should simply be allowed to exist free from the jungle of bureaucracy’s suffocating restrictions and obstacles.

And this aligns seamlessly with the ViniVeri Consortium’s battle for transparency in labeling. A campaign that the association has sustained for years: A wine’s label should be its identity card and should include complete and correct information on what is inside the bottle and how it is produced.
