13 Years of Wine as Nature Intended Them

Now in its thirteenth year, the ViniVeri 2016 fair features a walk-around tasting of wines and food products obtained using natural processes. Organized by the ViniVeri Consortium, this year’s event will take place April 8-10 in its usual spot at the “Fabbrica” exhibition space in the heart of Cerea, a small town located just a few miles from Verona.

The fair will also include guided tastings, dinners, and seminars devoted to issues like wine and health, wine identity, and authenticity in wine.

All of this year’s themes were wonderfully captured in the fair’s official poster, which was designed by the students at the Istituto Comprensivo “Petrarca” in Montevarchi (AR) whose submission was the winner in the consortium’s design competition for 2016.

Moderated by ViniVeri Consortium President Giampiero Bea

On the opening day of the fair, Friday, April 8, at 6 p.m., ViniVeri Consortium president Giampiero Bea will moderate a panel made of leading natural grape growers and winemakers from Italy as well as other parts of the world.

The gathering is intended to be an exchange of experiences, notes on best practices, and updates on a proposal for transparent labeling. The ViniVeri Consortium’s efforts to allow a list of ingredients to be printed on wine labels has been endorsed by Legambiente (League for the Environment) and Federconsumatori (the Italian Federation of Consumers).

During the summit, the consortium will present Giacomina Maltempi’s petition: “We must safeguard our health. Say NO to glyphosates!” The consortium has given the petition its unmitigated support.

“Emboldened by the ‘precautionary principal’ and by the most recent independent scientific studies,” writes ViniVeri president Giampiero Bea, “we categorically oppose the renewal of authorization to use glyphosate in Europe and throughout the world. Our position aligns seamlessly with the principals espoused in the ViniVeri Consortium’s founding statute.”

“One of the pillars of our regulations is the banishment of herbicides and chemicals from the vineyard. Not only do we ourselves endorse the current petition to disallow the use of glyphosate for the next 15 years, but we also encourage all grape growers and all natural wine associations in Italy and Europe to sign and support this important petition.”

The panel will be followed by a dinner at 8:30 p.m. featuring Umbrian recipes crafted with authentic and exclusively natural products.

A window onto true farming life in Italy today.

Director Davide Vanni presents and discusses his movie, which was filmed over the course of 12 months in twenty Italian regions on old trains, busses, and ferries. The work features 50 farms who are joined by a shared philosophy and artisanal practices in the vineyard aimed at achieving quality wines.

The screening will be followed by a Friulian-themed evening at 8:30 p.m. with a menu prepared by the kitchen staff of Trattoria “Da Nando” from Mortegliano (Udine province).
